What is Prime95 and what does it do?

Just saw a thread about it, downloaded it and from the interface It looks a bit strange.. Just wondering what the point in it is..

lmfao

your sig says your running at 3.5 ghz and you dont know what prime is :rolleyes::p

i take it your not a gamer....

Ok stop the humiliation.. >_> Yes I'm running at 3.5ghz and I dont know what prime is.. Is that a crime? >_<

Thats why I was eager to find out.. There's no law saying that if you overclock you NEED to know what prime is is there..

As I said previously in a lot of my posts, I am new to overclocking.. I asked someone their advice and what settings to use and followed them up on it.. I want to check my system for stability and thus the reason for me coming across prime95.. Temps seemed good at this clock so I was happy.. Yes I am a noob at overclocking but surely everyone has to start somewhere? Would appreciate it you guys could help instead of laughing but yeah..

Fair enough. Orthos is better than prime as it tests all the cores rather than just the one that prime does.

well id be using orthos for starters http://sp2004.fre3.com/beta/beta2.htm

core temp as well

runn orthos overnight at priority 9

i do an over night on small ffts then i do overnight on a blend

that is stable for me

its a program used to hunt for prime numbers. some people use it as a stress testing tool for testing thier overclocks. but in reality its been shown that prime is not a good tool for stress testing since its primary function is to hunt for prime numbers. there are other tools out there that put an even higher load on the cpu creating more heat than prime ever can, such as SNM and Intel TAT.

...but they are not as sensitive to computational errors which is why Prime95 (ver 25.2 upwards) is still the best tool for testing stability on a cpu.

Prime 95 is a program written to find prime numbers.
check out the GIMPS project.
Finding prime numbers takes a long time, so the code is optimised to be as fast as possible.
The heavily optimised code proved to be a very good test of the stability of a CPU and the overclocking community adopted it.

Nowadays the program has an option for stability testing, it didn't always it was written to find prime numbers.

BTW
Orthos is prime 95 the author just put a wrapper round it.
With the older versions of Prime 95 you had to start multiple copies to test all your cores.
The latest version automatically detect the number of cores and start multiple threads.

Nitrojan dont worry about some of these posters as they just like winding people up ;) Like you I am a noob but for your own safety do a search amongst the forums and you will more than likely find your answers :D

Take care and enjoy your PC

Its refreshing to see someone honest enough to state they know little about overclocking Nitrojan. It's much easier to help someone who is honest about there abilities than someone who claims to know a lot but in reality knows very little.

Good luck with the first overclock and if you need any help don't be afraid to ask and don't be put off by some of the guys around here. Have a good read through the stickies as a lot of the basics are covered there.

Echo what w3bbo has said, its obvious some people try to make themselves look bigger by trying to make other people look smaller! shame on you!

OcUK forums for the most part is one of the more friendly forums so lets keep it that way.

Nitrojan: Prime95 is just software thats designed to search for new prime numbers (mathmatics) however as it comes with a stress test the overclocking community have used it for many years to test the stability of machines/processors. If the CPU is a bit flaky the program will halt with an error and you know something is wrong.

There is no limit to the amount of time this program can run, it doesn't ever stop until it find an error so basically its up to you to decide when your machine is stable enough.

Back in the day I used to run Prime95 for a full 24 hours before I could be confident the overclock processor was stable however I have a few machines and its not such a hassle for me to tie one up in testing but a lot of folks with just one machine didn't want to wait a full 24 hours before they could start gaming and having fun so the duration got chopped down more and more.

Today the longest you would want to run the test is for approx 8-12 hours but even 1/2/4 hours is basically enough to indicate you got some stability. Normally if there is an error it will happen between 10 seconds and 1 hour so if you can pass this length you are heading in the right direction.

Personally I now am shying away from endless prime sessions because I have become obsessed with energy useage, can't tell you how many hundreds of ££££ I have spent on my electricity bills from running long priming sessions on multiple machines.

Hope that helps and good luck with the learning :)

I don't like prime95, it scares me,pushing my CPU far beyond anything it would ever have to do and making it heat up to 70C.

To be honest, like mentioned above, errors i find happen in the first few minutes, if i find it passes the first set of numbers, i.e. after a minute, it's stable enough for anything it'll be used for until i chuck it.
