What is Progressive scan?

Thanks for the reply Tunney the reason i ask is that when i press the Progressive scan button on the remote the picture goes all diagonal lines on the screen and i can't see any picture.Is this normal or should it still be clear?Also do i need to use this function?

No my tv isn't lcd/plasma.What about using one of those scart plugs that have the 3 rca connectors on in the back of the tv to composite connectors on the recorder,would that work?
 
So what would be the best connection to use from my dvd recorder to my tv?

Tv has .................
2 scarts with in & out on each one which can use s-video.

Dvd recorder has....2 scarts
composite vid in
S-vid in
composite vid out
S-vid out
component vid out
scart in
scart out
+ lots of audio in and out.
