What is RMA

I’ve recently developed a fault with some part of my system. I’m pretty sure it’s the mobo and I think I’ll need to do an RMA. It’s a Gigabyte X58A-UD3R and it’s only a month old

Can anyone explain what an RMA is?

Return Materials Authorisation

You normally raise a ticket with the manufacturer, in this case Gigabyte.. Have the Part number/Serial number handy. These will be cross referenced to see if the item is still in warranty. If so, they'll send you shipping and return details. Once they receive your goods, they'll test and replace.

Can be done via web or phone.

Also, if you're not comfortable sending it to the manufacturer yourself, you can often return it to the shop you bought it from, as they may act as a go between you and the manufacturer.

Not all shops will though, but OCUK does if you got it from them. It really depends how Gigabyte's direct support it though, so try them first.

Usually if it is within 12 months from purchase the retailer should be contacted, after 12 months, if the warranty is still valid, the manufacturer should be contacted.

Yes you are right for general problems, but most retailers/manufacturers will require an RMA so they can test it. The retailer will only send it back to the manufacturer for testing anyway, as they cannot determine who (if anyone) is at fault.

The contract is with the seller, not the manufacturer. If an item develops a fault within the first six months, the law presumes that it was an inherent fault at the time of purchase.
