What is safer

Considering purchasing an iphone 4 second hand but what is a safer way to pay? PayPal or bank transfer? As I cannot fully trust the guy as he has no "trust" i am in a bit of a pickle. Any help appreciated.

What do you mean he has no Trust ? If you mean Trust on here you have slipped up mate & shouldn't be buying that iphone from the guy whose thread was closed as mobile phone sales on here are against the rules.

If it's elsewhere there cash on collection is the only way I'd go as I'd want to test it properly Before paying.

Not on here bud. Problem is he lives about 170 miles away form me. Safest way is to do that. Probably will actually if he still has it by the time i have the money.

Trouble with 2nd hand iphones & smart phones is the possibility of them getting Blocked/Bricked.
I'd try to find a seller who has a replacement from Apple with a receipt & that comes unlocked. If I found that phone then I'd pay by Paypal but I'd need home numbers moby numbers house addy satellite images track & trace maybe even bring in Mi6.

A couple of mates have 2 shops in town buying stuff, When it comes to 2nd hand smart phones you really are playing Lucky Dip on whether the carrier blocks/bricks it a few weeks/months down the line.
On the other hand if you can get an Apple receipt for a replacement that comes unlocked you can buy with confidence.

The only ones you have to worry about are the ones on contract whose owners are selling them off for quick cash.

He linked me to an account, but he is no longer registered so i cant message him on that. The phone has been officially unlocked he says. I am seriously considering this but I want to make sure I will be safe. I'd rather avoid a 380 mile round trip is possible.

Unless its through eBay neither are save, if through eBay you are usually safe with PayPal. Got several phones on eBay and haven't had an issue.

Wonder if visa protection still works through PayPal? I assume it would?

The only way you could really make this work would be with an Escrow service.
