what is similar to windows' paint?

Gimp is quite powerful, considering it's free
I like it a lot, but on OS X it requires X11 which has to be installed from the original installation DVD, thus a great source of irritation. Since X11 apps are second-class citizens on OS X, despite Apple's cacophony of self-horn-blowing, there are more irritations because you can't use the clipboard between Cocoa/Carbon apps and the GIMP. It's a great application but Apple drops half the ball and the porters take care of dropping the rest.

I agree to a point, but they could always just port it properly to osx

That's what the Seashore folks are trying to do. However since unpaid developer resources are always somewhat scarce, I really wish Apple would quit telling everybody how awesome and UNIX-y OS X is and how neat it is that X11 apps can run natively on it. Apple's X11 is always years out of date and rife with bugs. It never seems to get updated. When there's a problem with X11.app Apple blames the xfree86 (found in Tiger and below) or Xorg (found in Leopard) developers.

Meh, it's not a huge deal. I'm just always looking for better cross-platform compatibility.
