I have been out of touch with cpu´s for soooooooooo long now it is a bit of a joke:o. Am more in to gfx cards and sound cards but the time has come to up grade form a Intel PD 3.0ghz too some thing with a bit more kick becasue it is masive bottle neck to my new GeForce GTX 260.

The rest of the system is:

OCZ 2GB 6400 800MHz Reaper

Fatal1ty FP-IN9 SLI nForce 650i SLI mobo

any help would be much appreciated:)

Mid+; E8400 or Q6600

Those 4 are only CPU's worth buying really, you won't be dissapointed with any of them, just depends wther you want to spend £45, £85 or £125

Q6600 tbh. Have now taken my E8400 up to 3.8ghz and even at that speed when compared with a q6600 at 3.0ghz its pretty similar. Q6600 is the best bang for buck.

Yeah.... If you're lucky you'll get your Q6600 up to around 3.7 anyway.
Some people with high-end cooling have them at 4.0Ghz!
Can't go wrong!

apparently the 650i isn't great for overclocking quads- i've only picked this up from reading a few forums posts here and there - more research will be needed :p
