I am wanting to buy a Sat Nav, I want a decent one without the LIVE which you have to pay monthly. What are the best Sat Navs out there that are clear, responsive, updated, good quality and highly recommended?

Was going to use an app on my phone, but I would rather a standalone Sat Nav instead. Any suggestions are appreciated. And any feedback on what features on the Sat Navs you recommend too.

I'd only ever recommend Tom Tom. You get a year free and you don't have to pay there after (but then you loose access to the updates).

You could buy the Tom Tom app on your phone as well if you wanted which may make it cheaper (but then, ideally, you'd need something to hold it and power it in the car).

Reasons why:

Interface is superb / Screen whilst driving is brilliant
Very, very accurate. Especially the postcode.
Great re-routing
Speed cams are superb (and you can update from PocketGPS.com so cheap)
It just works. So hard to find a device that does what it says on the tin.

Any particular model? :)

Garmin nuvi 3790T (£245) or Tomtom start2 (£110) are listed as well rated in last months stuff magazine top 10. If that helps

Ah that is great, I will look at them. :)

I'd get the tom tom XL IQ Routes™ edition² Regional

Can be found for as little as £115 online delivered :)

Tom Tom XL IQ routes europe thingy, any other sat nav is dire in comparison.

if you want to know which not to buy, BMW BMW BMW BMW, its **** ******* ****** ***** **** ********** ******************* ***** **** *** *****

"turn left, 500 yards ago".....

I really rate my TomTom 950 Live.

They do deals every now and then, I bought a years access for £23.75 recently from Halfords. Will use the code after my free year ends in 2months time.

Is this the model you are both referring to?

Know it sounds crazy. Not sure how old the 106 is,

Have you checked it has a cig lighter (12v plug)?

Some older cars don't have them and they need to be fitted.

To be honest I've always been impressed by the Garmin units over TomTom personally.

I'd go play with some first before buying and see which you prefer.

I've got a basic Tomtom start, it terms of giving directions it's pretty good, but the touch screen is a pain to use, sometimes unresponsive with delays, I wouldn't recommend it because of that.

Another vote for Tom Tom xl iq routes here I've tried others and nothing comes close to tom-toms for ease of use they are the iPhone of the sat nav world

5UB - you have an iphone. download navfree. it is perfectly good. buy a decent charging cradle for it with the change and give me £50 from the remaining funds for saving you all that hassle.

Mine was ok.

really??

i find it dire, it warns you about turnings 100yards before the event, at roundabouts she speaks in latin and the lack of 7 digit postcode entry is laughable.

I use it in dire emergencies only, the map view is pleasant though and I like the gps position in the other screen, pointless but attention captivating when in traffic jams for all of 6 seconds

Always liked tomtom. Had a slight change for about 2 months to a Garmin, but found the routes it sometimes took really strange.
