what is the D80 high ISO performence like?

Before buying new kit, have you considered or tried using something like noise ninja or neat image?
i've briefly looked into it, when i messed up some shots using my compact - but not on the d50. i've always been weary of them, i'd be loosing detail from the image.. but then i suppose it's worth a try considering a D80 would be £400+ (and am not selling the D50 because it kicks bottom for IR!).

I have a D50 and when I process my images in Lightroom noise at ISO 1600 isn't that bad really...
My brother has a D80 and although the noise is less, it's not worth £400. If it really bothers you why not buy a second hand D200 and see a real difference? ~£550
Sometimes I keep the ISO down by under-exposing by 1/3 or 1/2 stop, then pushing it back up afterwards. Shooting RAW also helps a lot.
May I ask what sort of situations you are in which require a high ISO?

well that shot isn't in full focus so the noise will appear to look blended so its not a true example of it.
I don't think you can expect too much better from the D80 though. Its only really these new Nikons that are really good at high ISO handling.

The D80 and D200 are pretty much identical in terms of noise. As for ISO 1600 on the D80, it's perfectly usable IMO.
That was shot at ISO 1100 (auto ISO), the colour version is similar in terms of noise.
EDIT: Here's a 1600 sample, simply exported + resized straight out of Lightroom. Noise Ninja does a good job with NR too, though this hasn't had any NR.

I moved from a D80 to D300 and the latter is very very good, the D80 isn't bad but not much better than the D50 that my other half uses. As Messiah says you would do well to try some of the standalone or plugins that can reduce noise before jumping to a new camera.
