hello as per title i am confused when i see Intel Pentium Dual Core E2180 2GHz does this mean its is the same as a core 2 duo as i belive a core 2 duo has 2 cores aswell , also will this e2180 be quicker than my old (now sold ) e6300 as it was only a 1.8

cheers

The cores are all the same.

E2xxx 1MB cache 800fsb
E4xxx 2MB cache 800fsb
E6xxx 4MB cache 1066fsb

Then there are newer models I've lost track of.

The performance difference in your E6300 and a E2180 is negligable

it's just branding. they are the same architecture, just lower clockspeeds and less cache.

What is really known as 'Core Duo' is the original dual core laptop based cpu, Yonah, which is based on Pentium M Dothan single core technology, sort of a forerunner to Core 2 Duo. Core 2 Duo is where we start seeing cpus based on the Allendale/Conroe cores etc..

The cpus you're referring to are known as Pentium Dual core which is only branding as said before, less cache/FSB but based to C2D tech.

I got an E6300 and an E2180 and the 2180 felt sluggish in comparison even thoguh it had a 200MHZ lead.

I think therefore, that the 1MB cache was a crippling factor whereas the 2MB of the 6300 was certainly a lot more important than youd think.

On both machines at the time, I was folding on both cores and 99% of the time they did bugger all but when called upon, it was almost always a game... The 6300 did it and never once gave so much as a flicker of slowing down, while the 2180 seemed to want to finished its cup of tea before it started to get off its fat arse.

This is how I felt anyway.

So, doing one job, they were pretty much on par with each other but onder a load, the cache of *** 6300 gave it an edge.

I have since given away my 2180 to InSanCen along with my DS3 ( NO!!!! - I want that back - I wish I never gave it him now ) and kept the E6300 in a box for one of the kids.

Also FWIW the E2180 in the BIOS comes up as a Pentium while the E6300 comes up as Core2Duo, so even if they are the exact same thing, it made the 2180 feel inferior for me anyway.
