I've seen "Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium EDU DVD" for £51.34, and was wondering why this educational version upgrade was so cheap, considering the normal upgrade is over £100?

I've got that one. From what I gather, it's intended for those in education (school, university or otherwise), or those working in education. It's seemingly identical to the normal retaul upgrade box (same fancy case too!). I don't know if you're required to submit proof of your in-education status because I haven't activated mine yet, but so far I've heard nothing.

I know we (secondary school) upgraded recently to Office 2007 for some stupidly cheap price. I'm not sure if the Edu licence extends as far as saying you're a teacher to get it cheap, as I was under the impression only the school could buy it for it's teachers; unlike Student/Teacher versions.

I'm sure Burnsy will be along soon to dispell all myths lol.

That's most likely under an MS School/Campus or Select 6 Agreement which allows staff to have license bought for them under the volume license agreement.

The software in question is called Education Academic Full Packaged Products and are for education institutions, students and charitable organisations who want to buy software in very small quantities.

How it Works

To qualify for FPP, you must:

  • Prove you are eligible before you buy the package. Students will need to be enrolled full- or part-time on a course that will deliver an academic qualification publicly recognised by the relevant national government education department.
  • Return the registration card to us after you buy the package
  • Make sure the package has a sticker on it saying 'Academic Price - not for use in a commercial environment'

As an extra incentive, for every EA FPP sold, the educational institute will also recieve a small rebate from MS.

Beware that this is basically a subgroup of volume licensing programm and therefore all OS licenses are upgrade only. Also, you are only entitled to buy one version of the software under the scheme.
