What is the next step down from the i5 750

Hi,

I was considering this CPU: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-299-IN

But I was wondering what CPU is the next one down, to save a bit of money. I'll be using Cubase, Photoshop, listening to music, doing office work and designing Web sites. Are there any other (cheaper) processors which would perform as well? What would you suggest?

I would say the socket 775 or socket am3+ is the next one down from the i5 750.

A Q9XXX series, or Phenom II X4. Neither will perform as well as the i5 though.

The next step down is a different socket. The i5 750 is the lowest CPU on the LGA1156 socket at present

But i5 750 is faster and can overclock more than the q9*** series.

Unfortunatley you can't just buy a processor you need a main / mother board. The 775 platform with a Q9XXX series CPU is cheaper than an i5 platform setup.

You mean the "chip" itself, not the chipset

No the 9XXX series won't match the i5. And there's all sorts of possible reasons why it's more expensive. You've got to understand just because something is faster doesn't mean it's more expensive to produce, and in reality the price difference is only about £5 between the Q9400 and the i5.

In that case it would be silly for anyone to buy a q9650 for £250 when the i5 is £150 ;O

A Q9xxx will appeal to those who already have LGA775 boards want to upgrade on a budget. Instead of having to change an entire platform ie memory, CPU and motherboard they can upgrade the CPU which will always work out better bang for buck.
