What is the point of the Home Hub? Really?

I'm posting this having put my old BT Voyager router back in as the central part of the network. I made the mistake of trying the HomeHub, and it's taken 36 hours for me to put it back in it's box for good.

Firstly, the thing is huge. I mean really huge. What's it all for? Just empty space if you ask me.
I also can't figure out whose idea it was to put just TWO ethernet ports on the thing. I mean wtf?

Then, having got over the small niggles, there are a fair few big ones.

The wireless is shoddy. Shoddy as hell. It drops all the time, for no goddamn reason, and it's range is pathetic. It's also horribly insecure, due to the fact that if you encrypt the signal, it just stops working. Yep, that's right, if you encrypt the signal it drops, altogether. There isn't even any MAC address locking ffs.

Also, the internet seems to be up and down like a yo-yo. Downloading anything large is pointless, as it will probably drop the connection partway through the file. I accept this is probably more BT than the HomeHub, but the HomeHub has certainly made it worse.

Rant over. I just wanted to give anyone considering the HomeHub a heads up. Don't bother. Or do, and burn the sodding thing.

It works for me.

Even on my Wii and DS.

i installed one yesterday and it was fine, ok the wireless hasnt a great range but i was away appx 30 meters and through 3 brick walls, needless to say it didnt detect the wireless

Not using the wrieless but mines seems to have been fine in the 3 weeks I have been using it. I would use my netgear router instead but then I wouldn't be able to use the Hub Phone which I think is a great idea plus I have my dect phones connected to it so i can use my BBTalk number easily for cheaper calls. On top of that you'll need the home hub to use BT's new Vision service which is free(so worth getting)

on the positive.. if the range is poop, that security on its own :D? 'less someone sits in your front garden xD

They are MASSIVE - I've not used one but a colleague at work had one delivered the other day. They seem a bit, well gimmicky really - tons of white plastic. Still, why not make a router the feature of your living room lol!

I wouldn't have one, I'll stick with my trusty old Linksys and Newnet ;)

I'm using one at the moment - not my choice, but my dads.

To say the router is big is an understatement. And i agree on the empty space thing, it just feels hollow.

I find the range ok, but tbh i'm not that far away from it, just up some stairs in the room opposite. But it does drop my connection, all the time. Even as i type this, it's saying it's aquiring network address, even though i'm browsing the internet.

I'm considering switching to my old router again, but my dad will notice. Maybe BT knew this would happen so they made it so big that parents notice if it goes missing? ;)

Or maybe they put a secret compartment inside where you can put normal routers, leaving parents happy in the knowledge that they are using bt's when theyre not :p
