What is the recommended HDD health check software these days?

The computer has started making a funny noise every few seconds that may just be a fan but may be one of the hard drives. The freeware thread has plenty of options for HDD benchmarking highlighted as very good but no HDD health checks highlighted as very good. If someone could point me to the best software that can check if my HDD is about to die that would be great thanks.

If it makes a difference I have 500GB seagate drive thats probably about 5 years old as my main drive, and a 3TB Western Digital Black that is probably about 6 months old or so (bought when GTAV came out for PC)

As a first port of call do a chkdsk run.

Thanks, if checkdisk doesnt turn anything up on the next boot I will give that a go. I think it was just the GPU fan rubbing against something though because it was making a hell of a racket directly proportional to the fan speed of the GPU after my recent gaming session

I always use the manufactures HDD's tools. Can't get no better than that.

The free version of HD Tune will show SMART info.
