i know the specification says 8800GT or higher as the cards require the chip. however what sort of card is needed to allow you to put games on High Physx with smooth detail etc.

i know it wouldn't cause the main fps of the game to drop if the second card is set to dedicated to physx.

im just wondering if you need a certain series to take the option to "high" and allow for the full effects with no problems?

i'd say the 9600gt is very capable and isnt as powerful as an 8800gt (Bear in mind a 9***gt series is just a rebranded 8800gt)

TBH the 450 will probably be more than is needed for physx. I'm waiting on the 440.

what about the likes of a 8600GT?
Waiting for the 6000series from ati and thinking of shoving a passive cooler on this.
Unless, of course, newer passive cards can be had for like £30 for physx.

An 8600GT would actually slow the main card down i think. Minimum id consider is an 8800GTS 320Mb, but personally id go for a single slotter like a 9600 or 8800GT

8800GT is the minimum not to be slower than doing it on the main GPU (with any recent main GPU).

You may get away with the 9600GT in some cases but I dont' reccomend it.

Back when I had a 5870 and used a 512MB 8600GT as a dedicated PhysX card, I noticed the FPS still dropped below 60 when playing Batman Arkham Asylum, usually to around 40-45 in places. Obviously turning PhysX off the 5870 could cruise through the game no bother so an 8600GT certainly isn't enough for modern games using PhysX!

Single slot 8800GT, I believe you can even get a passive 9800GT?

I had my old 8800GTS 320 running alongside my 4890 for a while. It was okay, but too hot and noisy so ditched it.

cool cool, just wondered, do the lastest seires of cards unlock any extra eye candy in he way of physx as they have new tech/hw?

im looking to buy a new Card soon to replace my 280GTX SLI (most likely a 580GTX & then use one of the 280GTX as a physx card as it would be spare.

You could argue that you may as well play all games on minimum settings too as it doesn't add to the gameplay. But then there are those of us who find that better graphics can really enhance the gameplay...

£30 on a second hand 8800GT and you're laughing. Seems like a good deal to me if you're going to be playing a few or more PhysX supported games. Sell it afterwards if need be and the whole experience would have cost you no more than about a fiver.

Would get one myself but there's no capacity for one in my system. My graphics card coolers take up 3 slots each! :o
