Hmmm, strange one - if you have windows restore switched on within vista, i'd rollback a couple of snapshots and see whether it's attributable to something you've installed (inadvertently or otherwise).
 
it isn't launchy - that looks different. don't use system restore.

i can't remember installing anything immediately before this occurred.

Looks a lot like Launchy, but without any text.
Take a peek into your Programs in Control Panel.

I shouldn't use System Restore though, I always find it to be the quick but not necessarily the best option.

...........did you look at the screenshot? im not being retarded and asking how to close a window. it is a blank window with no title and no buttons, it won't minimise and if i right click on the task bar icon of it, no menu is displayed.
 
lol soz i was just being silly

btw did u try ctrl alt esc/del or whatever it is for vista ...to see if a process name comes up for it ?
maybe help identify it.....or maybe run process monitor

thanks for the suggestions. it has now just stopped on its own...

i did check in processes to see if there was something that jumped out at me, but nothing abnormal.

oh well, i guess these things happen!
