But what's this? It connected to a usb c on the case but I've never seen this connector before and I can't work out where on my motherboard it goes

As you've deduced, it's a USB C front panel connector. Your board may not have one if you can't readily find it... There are adaptors out there to change this to regular USB pin header, but it'll run at 5gbps

Looks like I'll just leave it until I get a new am5 then as my current board has native usb c and now using this new case it's at the top, thank you though buddy

Your board has two USB 3.2 headers by the SATA connectors in the right-hand side. But not this type of connector it seems.

If you want to use it you can get a little adapter that will convert from the internal USB3.0/3.2 connector (19 pin) to Internal USB 3.1/Type-C connector.
