what is this component?

The board I have seen it on is an Intel D945gcz, yes it is a BTX board.

I have several of these I look after and this component on quite a few seems to be opening up where you can see it's in two pieces.

I will have a closer look at the board for a code
 
The pics are not of the same board just the same component on an Intel D945 board, I couldn't find a good pic of the actual D945GCZ.

I am inclined to think it is the crystal too but why have it in the odd shape plastic case and why are so many of the ones i've seen opening up.

Do you think Intel would bother getting back to me? it's not a board that's going to be under warranty.

I just remembered I think I have a faulty board in the office, I could cut the component off and investigate.
