What is this insect thing?

I've just seen this on my kitchen door. My mate says it's a cocoon but I'm not so sure :S It's SPIKED into the door D:

when they hatch make sure to stare them in the eye lovingly so they think of you as their mother...that will teach it to go round breaking your property.
