What is this noise?

Hey guys,

During the last week or so, I've noticed a noise that I'm 99% sure wasn't there before and was wondering if it's normal or if people know what might be causing it.

Worth mentioning before I start, the car is a 2.2D XF. I normally notice the noise when accelerating in the lower gears or when pulling away from a slow speed/stop, but it can happen in higher gears too, just less often. The only way I can describe the noise is that it sounds very similar to a supercharger when accelerating, it sounds nothing like the whistle of a dying turbo. The second I take my foot off the pedal it stops and then if I accelerate again it won't happen.

The frustrating thing is I can't reproduce it on demand, some times it does it, others it doesn't. And just when I think I've found the exact speed and gear that triggers it, it won't do it the next time.

I've not noticed any changes in performance, the car is absolutely fine. It's just that sound.

Thanks :)

Oh really? Wasn't expecting it to be something like that. It definitely sounds like it's coming from the front of the car but I may be wrong. It's only an 18 month old car with 10k miles, would that be an issue this early?

What do Jaguar say it is?

I went in quickly and described the issue but obviously couldn't reproduce it so they said it's probably nothing but I can bring it in and leave it with them for them to have a look

With work at the moment it's a nightmare trying to get it in, and waiting for a hire car to be available is weeks and weeks so I thought I'd just get some ideas here, just in case I'm wrecking the car by continuing to drive it :p

Not that many people replied, but for anyone who might be interested or ever experience similar...

I took the car in today for an air con issue as it had a leak and it turns out that's what was causing the noise. Something to do with the pressure being so low in the air con system that accelerating hard was causing something to kick in which was causing that high pitched noise
