What is with the attitude of builders?

I've noticed that builders/construction workers behave badly in the day time when they're working or on their breaks. I have contact with them when I’m on my lunch break and I go to the shop.

I’ve come across a few examples of these people being rude, but I’ve only felt the need to speak to someone about it after my lunch just, when I saw a big van with 3 burly blokes in the front stuffing their faces with food and what looked like 3 toddlers in the back (aged about 4-5 at a glance, I could be wrong). The front 3 builders in the van were shouting at the top of their voices to a young girl reversing out of her parking spot all sorts of lewd, vile comments.

What is their problem? Why do they behave like this?

killsta - lol no, sorry - they were strapped in. this van was big it had 3 front seats, 3 back seats then a big trailer section on the back

trickyj - yea I can imagine that not all of them are like this.

Its got on my goat today mainly because the way they treated this girl was so bad, I felt absolutely dreadful for her. It was disgusting, completely uncalled for comments they were making that you couldn’t even imagine being said out loud.

Then the fact this was taking place in front of some of their kids didn’t do them any favours with me.

I also notice they seem to look down their nose at me in my suit, as if I’m scum. Some of them seem to do stuff like invade my personal space by standing as close as they can without bumming me in the queue in the shop, and loudly sighing, and tapping their feet/keys etc to seemingly try and pressurise me !?!

I might be wrong but some builders I've encountered don't seem capable of making their own decisions either. I.e. I see one of them buying a sausage roll, and all of the others standing around making a nuisance of themselves, with contempt for everyone else in the shop, not letting them pass in the aisle etc....then they all see one (the ringleader, I assume) has selected a sausage roll, so they all pick up sausage rolls. What must be going through their mind ? "Sausage roll, someone else has picked a sausage roll and I don't want to be the odd one out by having a sandwich so I'm going to pick a sausage roll".

well yes it did remind me of chav behaviour, but some of them genuinally seem to think they are a cut above other people, in the shop, in their van staring people out who walk past, pointing or whatever.

Also have you ever noticed people doing that thing when they're in a crowd of a few people, they look at you and smile or laugh and pretend that everyone in the crowd is looking at you and laughing, but if you observe closely they're just doing it on their own :S

Get over yourselves eh.

Pardon? I've got nothing to get over mate, I'm an honest guy doing an honest job. which.....

Get over yourselves eh.
you probably are ****** off cos you went to all the trouble of going to uni, getting a degree in nonsense and only earning 25k (estimate)

... yes I've got a degree to get into (in a respectable, worthwhile subject may I add)....but I don't pride myself on my wage and , which you and 'your lot' appear to judging by your comments. I know a "tradesman" who says similar things to you, he says things like : "oh well you've got your fancy degree, but you only earn half what I do". Interesting comment, I certainly wouldnt ever say something like that to someone who earns - say, minimum wage. I just don't feel the need to brag about my wage. Also I dont think its a great positive to my job that I'm not 'likely to be killed'. I don't know what your point is there.

Can I ask you a question Jobe - do you leer and shout at women who've not provoked you at dinner time?

maybe you wouldn't but here you are slagging builders off for all buying a sausage roll. why. wtf do you care. what if some of those guys were of lower intelligence (and consequently earning around minimum wage) and construction was one of the few jobs they could do? would you still complain if you knew it to be sure?

I wasn't slagging off builders for buying a sausage roll, I was slagging the ones I saw yesterday off for their disgusting, lewd behaviour, and wondered why quite a few builders I've come across are like that.

As for your second point above, you make the best point in all of your posts in this thread and I certainly wouldn't complain about people being in construction for that reason. however I hope you dont think I have a problem with every single builder, I don't, just the attitudes of certain ones, but I hate the sheep mentality in a bad bunch.

Evidently, you do have something to get over, if you hadn't, would you really feel obligated to create threads that will almost certainly cause a negative reaction amongst others? Why not keep your trivial qualms to yourself?

lol - ok i'll stop using a public forum for asking a question of others
