What is with the shotage?

Guys! i am finding it real hard to find a Reference design GTX 570, in the last 3 days i have had to buy and return 3 (THREE) Cards as they are not Reference PCB's.

I am trying to find a second to add to my loop, is it a pointless task? should i sell my first and replace with a 580?

It's not necessarily a shortage.

When cards are launched nearly everyone uses the reference design.

As time goes on the individual manufacturers produce their own versions which are quieter, cooler or cheaper to produce etc.

This means the initial reference design is manufactured less and less and might ultimately disappear.

You can't really go by the pictures on website as they're illustrative only.

Someone just bought this:

It looks like a reference card but came with a GTX 480 cooler. Who knows whether or not the PCB is reference.

The best option, if you're buying new, is to contact a retailer who will hopefully be able to tell you if they have any reference design cards rather than just buying randomly and hoping for the best.

I see I see, Just peeved off mate, I bought my EVGA stock 570 in jan and i bought another 570 and two water blocks on Saturday, only the new 570 is the HD which is based on the 560 PCB so totally diff board, no good for the water block.
Today i drove 40 miles there (and obv 40 back) to take the HD card back but as i paid via Paypal i had to pay Again as the refund takes time, only the second card was the Asus thing, so now i have to take it all the way back AGAIN. ARGHHH

managed to find a REF EVGA today, trip to bolton and walllah!
