Hi there I have briefly searched the forum and I haven't found what has gone wrong with this laptop.

It looks something like this (this is not an original photo, just one very similar to mine):

Thanks in advance

Graphics card or screen probably, i'd suspect the former. Try plugging it into an external monitor or TV and see if the problem is apparent...if it is then its the graphics card, if not its likely to be the screen.

I think it is a screen problem because even when the monitor is turned off you can see the tadpole looking mark on the screen.

Thanks for your advice, now my question is whether it expensive to repair the screen? What sort of price range are we talking about?

If the laptop is still in warranty you can get a free repair. If not then go take it down to a repair shop and see what price they quote, it varies from place to place.

You can even try attempt to replace it yourself, the jungle sells quite a few laptop screens.

Cheers. I have checked some prices and they cost around £35 which is pretty good.

If you press where the inky black blob is does it spread under pressure? If so then it's 100% cracked.

Yes, it spreads. Pretty sure it is not a GPU issue. All I can hope is that it is only the screen because if a connection down the hinge is messed up then I'm screwed!

Classic cracked screen. GPU is fine. And as per above, cracked screen cannot really be caused by 'wear and tear' so highly unlikely to get a warranty replacement. However replacing screens is not too difficult. Just be careful not to break any of the plastic clips that hold the bits of the screen together or lose the rubber screw covers when you do it. Also be careful to get just the right model screen (even within the same model laptop there can be several). The easiest way to check this is to remove the old panel yourself from the lid before you buy a new one. The panel should have its model details written on it somewhere.
