what is your fave distro ?

Depending on what I am doing its a mix of the following.
Ubuntu, Debian or Elementary. Ubuntu 14.04 on my laptop, Debian for all my servers and Elementary on my desktop.

Ubuntu Gnome for no hassle install and go desktop.
Debian for servers or if I want to build a desktop from the ground up.
OMV for when I used to build my own NAS boxes. But I now use a Synology for no hassle.

Waiting to see how the next Elementary release turns out to decide on whether or not to use that to replace Ubuntu Gnome.

Ubuntu.
I have toyed around with about 7 other distros in the last year, and Ubuntu is the only one I have gone back to more than once.
The rest have a more of a Windows feel to them, but I wanted to get away from that, and Ubuntu has done it for me.
I just hope I don't get "too" into it as I am really looking forward to SteamOS later this year (waiting for final release).

how do you cope with unity taking up so much of the screen ?

If you install the compiz configuration manager you can shrink the launcher considerably and I think in the latest Ubuntu 14.04 it can be made smaller than they have allowed previously down to 20 I think.

Down to 16px in Ubuntu 14.04, but it's still god-awful compared to KDE. :p

I barely notice it. It takes up less if anything than an equivalent windows install for me as my "taskbar" is about the same width and sits vertically rather than horizontally.

Plus thats how I've always known Ubuntu to be so have accepted and got on with it.
