Strange. What just happened?!?!

Just had a very strange problem. PC in sig (minus a few things like fan controller, fans) has been running perfect for over a year now until just. I was idling in a COD4 server for most of the day while i was doing something else, and finally i came back to play. Switched my monitor on and popped downstairs to make a drink. Come back to find my screen black. I looked at the power light on my monitor, still on. Then i noticed no sounds from my headphones.

*Bad thoughts starting to kick in now*

Power down and unplug everything and take to the kitchen to have a proper look. Hook everything back up and it boots first time. Check temps/fans. Everything working and cool. Quick HDD scan, all fine. Load COD4 single player and play a level. All fine with usual frame rates etc.

So my question is, what the hell happened? And should a be concerned? :confused:

Could be an application problem, have you checked the event logs to see if anything was in error before or after? If everything seems okay, I wouldn't worry too much unless it starts happening frequently, then its probably best to start looking at things separately to try and nail down the issue. Drivers, apps, HW etc.

Cod4 dumped me to a black screen and rebooted the other day. First time. Sometimes software can bring windows down. I don't worry about it unless it reoccurs on a regular basis.
 
Happens on my laptop occasionally, when trying to wake up from screensaver/monitor standby mode. Screen powers back up but is blank. I just power off and on again.

Doubt it's hardware related, probably just a driver or app. No idea what it is but its so infrequent, I can just live with it for now.
 
If it's a bug in Call of Duty 4 I'll guarantee you that the bug was probably found once during a soak test, bunged into TTP (a bug tracking database) and couldn't be reproduced. Closed as not seen. :D

Have a look at Event Viewer and see if you've got any information on the occurance, but if it doesn't happen again I'd say it's more than likely just a 'once only' crash.
