Virtually all movies in this genre suffer from the same problem there is almost always an opportunity to escape once the danger is known but the protagonists never take it as that would ruin the movie. The whole going back to confront the assailant thing that so often happens in these films i cringe worthy, who goes back to see the nut job that was trying to kill them without the police etc?
