What kind of performance increase will it get?

Was 150 yds from OCUK - now 0.5 mile; they moved
Going from a
Socket 939 3800 X2
with a ASRock dual-SATA2 939 mobo
with a single PC3200 1GB generic stick
and a X1800XT

Going over to a
Socket AMD AM2 3800 X2
with a standard AM2 -PCI-E mobo (not sure which one yet)
with GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C5 800MHz Value DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400DC)
and the same X1800XT GFX

Reason is, I've been given a AMD X2 3800 AM2 Free, so I have thought about the updrage to DDR2, I have purcahsed the GeIL RAM as its so cheap atm.

So please don't go on about C2D being better, cos I know - but I have been given the CPU free!

What will the computer be used for mate?

I'd possibly think about selling it as you are only going to be seeing a difference due to another gig of ram really.

Well you should notice the difference in having 2gb but other than that no difference whatsoever, at least as stock although it might overclock a bit further than the ASRock does. The fact the Ram is DDR2 compared to DDR makes little difference of itself. :)

No improvements whatsoever.

You are better off selling the CPU and either stay with your current rig or get a cheap C2D & mobo for a little bit more.

*EDIT* lol all 4 posts at the same time.

I have a very limited budget

Would this "Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.80GHz (800FSB) - Retail" with a standard none expensive mobo give any benefit?

Depends how much you've overclocked your X2, I upgraded from X2 3800+ to E4300 and it performs identically with my X2 clocked @ 2.6Ghz.

I have the E4300 on an Asrock 4CoreDual VSTA motherboard. This allows you to use DDR or DDR2 and AGP or PCIe so you would be able to use your existing kit.

It was just about the easiest overclock I have ever done to get it to 2.7 GHz perfectly stable with the stock cooler.

I have no doubt at all that with better cooling and a more o/c friendly mobo that the chip would go a lot further.

The question you have to ask yourself is whether you need a faster cpu (dual core 3800 isn't slow tbh) for just wow and browsing?

And lol and the first responses although I blatently won.

I did try STALKER demo, and it seemed to struggle a little, but that may have been the 1GB only and the X1800XT limiting it

Maybe consider selling the new cpu and holding onto the money until you start playing a more cpu intensive/ next gen game and put the money towards a c2d, 2gb of ram and maybe a new graphics card? Prices are falling constantly on the dual cores and ram aswell as new graphics cards coming out all the time. Seems like the best idea to me matey.
