What kind of price for 24" gaming monitor?

So I'm after a new monitor for playing games, 24 inch widescreen is what I'm after. What kind of monitor would be good for playing FPS games?
Would 120hz be worth it or not? I don't really care about 3d.

What kind of price am I looking at for this kind of thing? Ideally spending as little as possible.

Any advice would be much appreciated :)

If you are mainly playing FPS games then I would recommend a 120Hz monitor - they are just great for fast-paced games due to the smoother-feeling motion, low ghosting and low input lag. However, there currently aren't any 24in 120Hz monitors I would recommend.

There are quite a few nice 23in ones, as well as a few 27in ones (but prices of these start well over £400). If you are looking to get a nice 120Hz for a relatively low price - then I would have a look for an Asus VG236HE (here is a review).

If >£200 is relatively low price then I think I'll not need a 120Hz monitor for the time being. For a decent 24" 60Hz gaming monitor, would £150 be enough?
 
Yea, ~£200 is really quite cheap for a nice 120Hz monitor. The 23in 120Hz samsung I mentioned costs £390.

If your budget is only £150 then I would have a look at the Iiyama 60Hz TN panel 24in monitors like the E2409HDS - its a solid monitor and works well for gaming.
 
I have read reviews of that monitor and it looks very good. Is there any other monitors around that price range that are worth having a look at? I may be able to increase my budget if it's worth it.

Around that price range that Iiyama is pretty much the best one. There are some ASUS ones, but I hear they have issues with ghosting.

If you are prepared to increase you budget then there are some nice samsung 60Hz models.

If I were to get the 120Hz, would I need to be getting 120FPS in games for it to be worth it?
In Battlefield 3 I'm averaging 60-70FPS, I have heard that this may make it worse, is this true?
 
No, you don't need to have 120FPS to get big benefits from a 120Hz monitor. Mainly motion will feel smoother and tearing will be reduced. It certainly won't be worse running a game at 60-70FPS on a 120Hz monitor vs an equivalent 60Hz monitor.

Unfortunately, no.

That monitor is made to work with HDMI 1.4 3D (like from 3D Blu-ray players) and AMD's 3D implementation (using the displayport connection).

For 3D with Nvidia graphics cards you need a monitor that will do 3D via a Dual link DVI connection.
 
The Benq XL2420T is a 24" 120Hz monitor that has just been released and so far it has had very positive reviews as a gaming monitor.

So what monitor do you recommend for me then? I want the monitor to look nice as well :)

May I ask what you budget is and what will you be using it for?

At the moment the best Nvidia 3D vison monitor seems to be the 27in asus vg278h which comes with a built in 3d vision kit (and a pair of gen2 glasses included).

the benq mentioned by rec has just come out and looks promising - but the only review I can find (admittedly by Cnet) is pretty lukewarm. Rec, do you have links for other reviews? Cnet may well have been wrong.

The Asus VG236H is also worth a look - as this is a decent 120Hz monitor with the 3D vision kit included. Though dear in mind this is only the version 1 kit - so the larger glasses and lightboost technology are not included.
 
Ah, yes - my apologies. I searched for "Benq XL2420T review" and the only actual review hit I found on the first page of google was this - but on closer inspection this is for the XL2410T.

Hopefully some nice in-depth reviews of the XL2420T will start appearing soon.
 
Yeah, I'm keeping an eye out for some reviews of the XL2420T. Read speculation it won't be much better than its older brother but plenty of people on the forums seem to be very happy with it. I'm not buying for a few months anyway, just putting my ear to the ground.
