What kind of temperatures would kill a Q6600?

I've had this CPU for about 4 years and it's starting to show its age, so I've decided to overclock it to 3GHz. I don't really care if it dies, because it will force me to upgrade, but at the same time I want to squeeze as much out of it as I can while it lasts. Right now my voltages in the BIOS are set to 1.3 for both the core and the FSB, though the core voltage is reported at around 1.25 in CPU-Z.

Just browsing the web and general use put the temperate at around 60c. Stress testing with Prime95 got it up to 86c at 100% CPU usage. Stress testing with another benchmarking program at 100% CPU usage got it up to 110c before I stopped it, but speedfan was reporting minus temperatures for all the cores so I don't know if that 110c is a genuine reading or not.

I seem to remember it seeing somewhere that around 105 was the absolute max, but don't quote me on that...

For such an old CPU the Q6600 still packs quite a punch once OC'ed...

Use Realtemp or Coretemp, speedfan is extremely unreliable at reporting temperatures. The TJMax on them is 100c, but anything over 80c for a length of time will shorten the life of your CPU.

At 3GHz on 1.3v I seriously doubt you'd see 105c even on the stock cooler unless it's not seated properly.

Pretty easy to get 100+ with the stock cooler* (tho more likely its not seated properly) if your gonna clock it tho grab a cheapy tower cooler which will bring temps way down. I don't reccomend running over 80C if you want to keep it long term, but it will probably last atleast 2 years of average useage upto 100C.

* Some of the later ones had a really cheap and nasty aluminium stock cooler with a really thin base and the minimal copper center they could get away with.
