what KIND of virus is this?

Hi all,

One of our pc's running avg free edition got a bounceback email from our hostmaster saying that the mail i was trying to send had failed. But i'd never sent the message and it was to a spoofed address on our domain from my email address.
The message it was trying to send was 'image spam' the stuff where you get a pic at the top of your message then text below it. Even sophos doesn't stop this on our other network.

My question is: could this be a so called mailer virus?
I'd like to buy/install the best AV software for it (Bit Defender looks good at present), but want to know if it will tackle this problem.
And i may only be able to find that out, if i can put a name to the kind of problem we're having.

Sounds like you've got some kind of trojan running that's part of a phishing scam tbh.
