Hello,

I'm looking for a cheap sub £1k laptop for my boy, I've nailed it down to one of two both same price both legion 5 laptops but slighty different specs, what one would be better?

First laptop
Ryzen 5 5600h
Rx 6600m
FHD screen 165hz

Second laptop
Ryzen 7 5800h
Rtx 3060
FHD screen 120hz

Both have same 8gb ram and 512gb SSD and both £899.

What one is best value for money?

Cheers

What will he be using it for?

Gaming and school work, but knowing him, mostly gaming. He plays all sorts of games as he has access to my steam and gamepass. So basically after a good all rounder, I'm kinda leaning towards the 3060 model as I know it's the full fat GPU, I can add more ram and a nvme later on down the line. But didn't know if the 120hz will hold it back. In fact not sure if games on a 3060 will hit 120hz maxed out.

Plus the 3060 model is a Ryzen 7, prolly not a huge difference over the Ryzen 5, two cores and 4 threads. He doesn't edit or anything like that.

I'd also lean towards the 3060 model as you'll get more longevity out of it.

120Hz is fine, and you can always looks at upgrading with an external higher res and refresh rate monitor at a later date if needed. Unless he's into proper top tier competitive shooters, 120Hz is more than enough.

8GB will likely bottleneck the system so just make sure that there is a free 2nd slot. 512GB of storage should be fine if he doesn't need a ton of different games installed - some laptops have a 2nd M.2 slot, which makes upgrading easy.

One of the main reasons for the legion 5 is the ram and SSD / nvme is fully upgradable, I didn't think about an external monitor that pretty much solves the 120hz issue.

I'll go for the 3060 version, thanks for the help.

No worries. I've seen a lot of positive feedback for the Legion models so he should be really happy with it.

3060 is the way I'd go too. I have the Legion 5 Pro with a 3060 and it's really impressive even at 1600P.

How do you find the cooling capabilities of the laptop does it get hot and thermal throttle or does the keys get warm? Silly question I know but he really does spend a lot of time on his technology.

It is certianly audible on full pelt but no thermal issues or problems with heating the keyboard. The 5 Pro is slightly different to the non Pro but that is meant to be very good too.

I'd go 3060, but can yo upgrade Ram to 16GB?...got 6gb in our home laptop....it's maxed out all the time..it is pretty old but geeesh, it's slow

I have been looking at laptops recently and one thing I have seen mentioned is to make sure you get the 130W 3060 models and not the 85w ones as they are not very good.

I have also been looking at the Legion laptops and also been thinking of holding off for a bit longer due to 12th gen laptops now making an appearance so you may get a previous gen one cheaper or a 12th gen one for a little more.
