17-40: Good for Landscape
100-400: Good for Motorsport

Sigma have some very good telephoto offerings as well - I suggest you look at their line up.

It depends which you think you're going to photograph more. I'd probably go for the 17-40 as it's a common focal length.

As Sleepyd said - it depends what you needs the lens for ?
You've picked complete opposite ends of the focal length range with the 17-40L and the 100-400L IS.

I have both of those lenses and I use the 100-400L more but then I tend to goto more Motorsport events than landscape trips.

You see I use my 17 - 40 L mostly due to lack of places to visit requiring long length. I have never really had a good run out with the 100 - 400L but that will change soon.

You really need to decide what your gonna want to photograph more. You have the 70 - 200 L which I believe is a better quaitly lens than the 100-400 so you have quality and reach. You mentioned wanting to do landscape work and therefore you have already selected your candidate and to me sounds like your minds made up.. Plus its cheaper and you could invest in some handy filters.

Your 70-200 should be fine on tracks like Brands Hatch, Donington, Croft and other circuits where you are reasonably close to the track.

Places like Silverstone are going to be more of a struggle, picking the places more carefully/getting a good spot will be much more necessary.

I have the 70-200 as well and this is what my early impressions of it are, not been to Silverstone with it yet but am hoping to soon.
