What lens..

He's saying that the kit lens is 18-70, so the OP doesn't need to buy another one.
He might want something with a larger max aperture for low light situations and something that is sharper. I only use Canon lenses myself but a few to look at are...

Sigma AF 18- 50mm f/2.8 EX DC Macro
Sigma AF 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro
Sigma AF 24- 70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro
Tamron AF 17-50mm f/2.8 SP XR Di II IF-LD
Tamron AF 28- 75mm f/2.8 SP XR Di IF-LD Macro

sorry, you will have to bare with me - im the total photography noob. I can use the camera and know a little about the different settings, but lens types etc are new to me. I want something that is like a wide angle, and as scuzi said, something for low light situations. The kind of lens that cykey is using in most his shot :p but thats probably gonna cost a fortune.

Don't get drawn into the thinking that owning the same lenses as cykey will allow you to take photos of equal impact. Cykey's photos would look good taken with a camera phone ;)

If I remember correctly he uses a Sigma 10-20, Sigma 24-70 F2.8, Canon 50 F1.8 and a Canon 100-400L IS

^^ yup, spot on SDK, those are the lenses he uses.

the 10-20mm is a very wide angle lens, so if you are going to be very close to these cars, ie no more than a few meters, then this would do you. However, due to its largest aperture being f4, low light might cause you some problems without a tripod. The 18-70 is a good idea. If you have a nikon body then this lens you simply cant go wrong with. It's very sharp, quick to focus, but its max aperture size is only f3.5, which isnt a vast improvement over the 10-20mm.

If you want to go prime lenses, (im not sure on the quality of these lenses) then the sigma 24mm f1.8 might work, it has very good low light performance, and i dont think it cost a fortune either. Also being 24mm in focal length, its neither too narrow nor too wide, allowing you some freedom in where you position yourself.

EDIT: Sorry just noticed you have the Sony body. Ignor where necessary :)

oh dont get me wrong, i know ill probablt never be able to take pics as good as cykey does. What i meant was the kind of angle of most of his pics seem.... odd, like wide angle. but im talking out me rear end now so lol.

I think the Tamron AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical will best suit your needs. Here's a copy and paste from a review site...

The Tamron AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II LD Aspherical [IF] is a very serious performer capable to deliver some of the best MTF50 figures to date in this lens class. Vignetting and distortions are about average for a lens in this class. CAs are very high at 17mm and 24mm. Mechanically the lens isn't top notch but it compares very well here to other third party lenses. AF accuracy could be a little better on the Nikon D200. Thanks to the very moderate price tag the lens is highly attractive and definitely worth a deeper look when shopping for a quality standard zoom lens for your APS-C DSLR and it's also a very serious alternative to the genuine Nikkor standard zooms.

The constant f/2.8 aperture throughout the focal range will provide you with excellent low light performance and will allow you more control over depth of field. All the reviews seem to suggest that it is an excellent lens.

It can be had with the Minolta/Sony mount for about £300.
