Hi guys,
Could anyone help my with buying/choosing lenses for my Canon 500d.
I bought that camera few days ago it was equipped with Kit 18-55 lens.
Would anyone help me with buying one lens for portraits and another one for lanscapes with nice zoom.Everything for amateur photographer, not very expensive.

Do you have a rough budget in mind? For portraits on a budget I'd recommend Canon 50mm f/1.8 II (the nifty fifty) which can be had for circa £75, on a crop sensor camera like yours (and mine) it will be an equivalent of 80mm, I find it pretty damn good for photographing people.

For landscapes you'll want to a wider angle lens and with crop camera you'll most likely be going for an EF-S mount one. Is there a particular issue with your current lens that makes you want to upgrade (not wide enough, etc) or you simply looking for an upgrade?

Everything is ok with Kit lens i am after just for better quality and bigger zoom.
Neoboy the lens Canon 50mm f/1.8 II is the one that i am want to buy.

Landscape lens with bigger zoom than 55mm on your current lens is a somewhat conflicting idea but I suppose that's where something like Canon EF-S 18-200mm can come in. That will set you back over £350 though although you could go little cheaper and get the 18-135mm lens at £220+. Those aren't the most optically gifted lenses and more jack of all trades since they cover vast focal ranges (cheaper Sigma and Tamron alternatives are available too). Saying that a dedicated landscape lens would set you back a lot too so this is probably the point where you'll find that photography gets expensive outside the world of the kit lens!

In USA is 30% cheaper.I've noticed that the lenses are few times more expensive then the camera itself.

Yes, well done for noticing that. Ship from America. Take account the costs for shipping from the states and import duty tax = price about the same as UK. And no international warranty on lens.

And also the 2nd part of your statement, am i right is saying that there are some lens out there thats more expensive than a body itself!?

/note the sarcasm

Is the 18-55mm the IS lens?

If it is its a pretty decent start to be honest. Its fairly sharp and the only logical step up from it is a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8.

Personally I wouldn't go investing in 50mm just yet. Learn what type of portraits / landscapes you like to shoot and you may find that a 50mm is not what you want.

Decent results can be achieved with the 18-55mm IS.

For a zoom lens I'd say get a Canon 55-250mm IS. Very sharp considering its price and dont be scared to go 2nd hand for one, they can be had for around £130.

I have done some research that's why i purchased an amateur dslr not semi pro.I knew it it would be too hard for me as a begginer.

There's no harm investing in semi cheap super zoom in the 18-200/250mm area from 3rd party manufacturers like Sigma, Tamron and Tokina for a beginner. You get all the versatility of only carrying one lens and overtime you would realise which focal length you like and don't like within that lens and buy new lens accordingly when you outgrown the lens.

My friend started off with a 350D and a Sigma 18-200mm, he was able to take very good pictures from them as hes good with his composition and technique. He recently bought a Sigma 35mm f/1.4 as he liked that focal length the most and now he uses it 90% of the time.
