What makes a good ISP? (Sick of Eclipse) + LLU charge?

I'm on Eclipse's LLU service and the last few months it has gone down hill. My speeds were MAX 1.8meg (I know I can't expect the full 8) and now my download speeds are topping out at a massive 5k a second. Hilarious.

How do you chose a replacement? I checked some of the awards, but Ecplise managed to get a few for best broadband, despite so many people I know on it with pants speeds!

Be for example sounds great, but how do I know it won't be pants?

Lastly, I've heard talk of an almost £50 charge because I'm using LLU. What's that all about?

If you migrate out of LLU to a BTW based service (most ISP's) then you will be charged the same price as a new connection or put onto a 6/12/18month contract. You will not be charged this by another LLU provider though.

I chose Aquiss because of their support. The Enta based connection has had 15mins of downtime since I joined in October and that was due to emergency work upgrading the IOS on their routers. I don't mind the slow down at 10pm and weekends due to the advantage knowing I can download anything of interest that is huge in that time.

You can only go on user recommendations, and I would say Be is high up on the good list. Although Be might not take you on due to line length.

You will (or more to the point, the ISP will be charged it - whether they pass that on is up to them, the same as with IPStream), and BTw's more or less just another LLUer now.

It might be a good idea to make sure you can actually get Be. Samknows should give some indication of your (straight line) distance from the exchange and what LLU providers are available.
