As per the title, I always thought that only one game gets the Game of the Year edition accolade but after reading up on it it appears that it's a title given out by various different gaming sources (both internet and magazine based)

So what is it that made Fallout 3 qualify for a Game of the Year edition or Call of Duty: Modern Warfare the year before? Albeit COD was awesome :D

Was I right in my initial thinking that only one game this year will be given the GOTY treatment next year? And does the game that qualifies have to be multi platform title like COD & Fallout were? Personally my game of the year would probably be Uncharted 2 but with that being a PS3 exclusive I cant really see that being re-released next year

GOTY edition just means a publication, any publication, has nominated it as its game of the year. It's not exactly an officially recognised title.

So basically one source names a game as their GOTY and the $ signs flash up in the Publishers eyes and thus they re-release the game under the GOTY title?

Shame I was hoping for something a lot more technical than that :(

To be fair, GOTY editions are usually when the original was nominated/awarded game of the year with a reasonably large publication or website, AND usually include extra content packs or expansions that could have been available for the original but not without cost.

Main reason I have Morrowind and Oblivion GOTY editions, Im not particularly a huge fan of those games, but additional bits and pieces often justify GOTY game prices if they're not massively inflated, both of the above included several expansion packs with the game :)

GOTY editions also usually include any patches or fixes since released to help improve the original so you dont have to try and find them (admittedly less of an issue on the consoles!)
