What makes my engine sound "coarse"

My mates corsa is a few years old and when accelerating etc its a fair bit quieter than my clio - ie my engine sounds pretty coarse when accelerating.

What causes this? I know its an older engine etc but what exactly makes and engine quiet or loud?

Noise = Up

Sorry, there could be a whole host of reasons, has it always done this?
 
It is noisy because it is French.

Probably too busy force-feeding it's cows with human faeces and burning hay bales on motorways to be quiet.

I dont think anything is wrong with it, its just loud and unrefined so to speak compared with the corsa.

That pretty much sums up french cars, yes, doesnt really answer the question tho :p;)

What makes an engine quiet and what makes one sound more unrefined?
