I've never been sure whether you should write 'study martial arts', 'train in martial arts', 'compete in martial arts', 'participate in martial arts'

Anyway, I was reading the Bruce Lee vs All threads and the self defence concealed weapons thread, and given some of the advice, I wondered what the martial arts background of the OCUK members were. Also its nice to find people with similar interests.

To start, I am First Dan ITF & WTF Taekwondo with some training in Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu, Wing Chun and Hapkido.

What do you do?

Have had a go at a few martial arts but the only one I found I could sustain going to was Lau Gar Kung Fu. This is mainly down to the methods used by the trainer, plenty of sparring and also includes some competition sparring at the end of some of the lessons.

I reached the dizzy heights of my second belt (I havent really been training very long at all!) before my son was born, now I have to try and get back into it now that my wife is back on her feet enough to handle me having the 2 training session out a week.

Well, i'm going for my orange belt in Jiu Jitsu, been doing it for nearly a year now, and apparently my progress has been pretty good. Really enjoy doing it, dont do it for fitness neccessarily, or self defense, but i guess it helps with both of these...

I like it because it can be as calm or as full on as you want really - it takes the best bits from aikido, judo and other arts and fuses them into something pretty formidable if you can doit well (which i'm a long way off yet!)

I am starting Ju Jitsu next week with a mate, cant really contribute much as I obviously havn't been yet, but Im looking forward to it.

There is a big martial arts thread in sports that might interest you here

Ju Jitsu here, stopped when I got my black mainly because of the stupid grading prices. But along with that did a lot of weapons work. Only went in one competition for it which was for ground work, got a silver due to loosing to a girl in the final  .

Also did Judo got up to my blue and entered in quite a few competitions, got plenty of browse and one silver .

Takekwondo for 7 years, but some big gaps.

It do it for:

Fitness, its fun, meet people, get good muscle tone, good flexibility, mental strength and well being, I quite like sparring.

Qualified Instructor - Black Belt 2nd Dan Escrima (not officially trained for a few years due to work, and Karate many years ago.

Escrima (also known as Arnis and Kali) is a weapons based martial art which comes from the Philippines. It is the national sport of the Philippines, and has a very long history of combat effectiveness. Only recently has this art become more conspicuous in many countries and enjoyed the popularity of other more traditional Asian arts. Its difference from other martial arts is that the student is taught to train with weapons from the very start, rather than starting on empty hands training (like many martial arts do). This type of training builds manual dexterity in the practitioner and also trains faster conditioned responses to various attacks. Although it is weapons based, it also includes striking (kicking and punching), wrestling and grappling, and even groundfighting, as well as teaching practical defenses against most weapons. In the Philippines it is referred to as Arnis in the northern islands (Luzon), is known as Escrima in the central islands (Visayas), and is known as Kali in the southern islands (Mindanao).

If I was to do one, I quite like the idea of taking up Kendo or one of the other weapon based ones.

Kendo is my kind of martial art: cover yourself in padding at hit each other with a big stick.

Join the rozzers then :)

I've given it thought.

I like the idea of beating up black people and taking bribes but I'd fail the fitness test ;)

Too many knee/hip injuries over the years.

Few months Karate when I was about 10 :)

8 Years Wing Chun

I've also been doing some BJJ and Wrestling on over the last 2 years.

1 years Doce Pares Escrima (Stick and knife fighting) but since given it up as I couldn't put in the time and attention it requires to get past the basics.

I'd love to try some Systema if I got the chance.

I guess I was never sporty as a kid, things like football and stuff just bored me. I was always into cool stuff like soldiers, guns and fighting. So thank god for martial arts because I would probably be really unfit right now otherwise.

I think we are still feeling the after effects of the Swenney and Not The Nine O Clock News, given those sweeping comments, although I do see the possible twinkle when you say them.
