What memory for AMD system?

I've had a nightmare trying to get memory that works as advertised on a similar setup.

It depends on what you are after. My problem was that I was trying to get stuff to run at CL7 at 1600. Although there is plenty of stuff claiming to do this, the ones I tried wouldn't run as advertised on AMD and when I contacted tech support was told that it was sepcifically for Intel P55 (that was GSkill Ripsaw).

As I researched to try and find alternatives I found this was a common story.

The problem is that most RAM has the enhanced settings in XMP which the AMD boards can't read. So you are on your own with a lot of manual tweaking to try and get it to work at those settings - many reporting failure. And most are 'specifically designed' for Intel.

I ordered the Patriot G Series AMD stuff, but after hanging on for a couple of weeks being told it was arriving 'soon', 'today' OcUK eventually conceded that they didn't have an ETA. So I've changed to the Geil Ultra. Again this is 'specifically' for Intel so I'm not sure how much joy I will have with it. I'm guessing that I will end up with CL7 at 1333.

If you just want stuff to run at CL9 then pretty much any of the stuff will run.

Far be it for me to try and disuade you, but I personally regret going AMD over Intel because

(i) I5 750 system costs about the same
(ii) I5 stock performs about the same as 955 stock. But I5 will clock to 4GHz fairly easily, whereas the 955 will struggle to get to 3.8GHz
(iii) Intel is so much better supported (things like RAM)

You could buy my unused AMD stuff so that I could buy Intel ;)

Cheers,

Nigel

To be honest, I just want to plug and play. I do like to tweak but haven't got time to tweak and play games so I'm unlikely to OC it much.

I just wanted to use AMD with an ATI graphics card because my current intel/nvidia system has been nothing but grief and failure so I wanted to give the little guys a go :)

Well that's fairly easy then.

The Phenom II internal memory controller runs at 1333. Anything higher than that is handled by overclock on the motherboard.

The Jedec standard for DDR3 is 1333 @ CL9. If you are happy with that speed then just about any DDR3 memory sold will run at that.

Cheers,

Nigel
