Im considering whether to buy the 800mhz ram, I believe this is a lot faster than the E6300 is initially set at. Is it quite common to be able to overclock the CPU to 800MHZ as I have heard it normally runs at only 533MHZ. Also would this produce a lot of heat as I was going to use the Ninja cooling device so I could run it without a fan.

Well the 6300 needs pretty high timings to get to 3Ghz, you need 430FSB ( 860Mhz on the RAM )

Most ( not the value stuff ) of the RAM should do 860Mhz, but you need a decent board also, like the DS3/DS4/650i type mobo

Would this be good enough to get up to those speed - OcUK 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400 800MHz DDR2 Dual Channel Kit.

GeIL 1GB (2x512MB) PC6400C4 800MHz i have that on mine its only my spare pc so thats why i only went for a gig but that gets to 3ghz a walk in the park.

and completely stable on orthos for 8 hrs.

i have the freezer pro on it and the temps never get over 48 under load

Crucial Ballistix, as recommended in your thread in the memory forum, is pretty much the best memory at this side of £160, and it's only £126 for 2Gb.

Ignore the fact that it is PC5300, not PC6400 as the OcUK value stuff. Once you overclock it it will reach far higher speeds than the cheap PC6400 ram if you slacken the timings slightly.

Thank you for the advice. I'll have to decide the between the crucial ballistix as it looks like it has good timing compared to the ocuk memory but is £45.00 more. Thanks for all the advice though, it has helped a lot. :D

You definitely want either 6400 RAM, or good-clocking 5300 like the Ballistix. I'm running an E6300 on a DS3. What I didn't realise is that there's no option to run the RAM any slower than the FSB, so if you want 3GHz you need RAM which can do 860Mhz.

I'm using the low-latency Geil stuff which is fine up to 900Mhz, but I'm beginning to wish I'd got the Crucial 5300.

I got a pair of Crucial Ballistix PC5300 with my E6300 and P5B DELUXE WIFI. That's amazing. Easily running at 1000mhz(2.25V) 5-5-5-15.

what makes the low latency stuff better and why? sorry for asking all these questions?

It's better quality memory. The difference between 4-4-4-12 and 5-5-5-15 is very small, but the CAS4 stuff will almost always overclock far higher than the CAS5 stuff.

In simple terms, the CAS5 stuff is regarded as being near its upper limit already, whilst the CAS4 stuff is only getting started.

it probably would but i would just get some Team Xtreme pc6400 2gb and be done with it :D this stuff rocks!

Yup team stuff kicks ass with my E6300 @ 3.5ghz.

The cpu gives up before the ram does. When i was last playing around with the ram i was going for 510 @ 4-4-3-4, but gave up as i wanted a perfectly stable rig then and there !
