What method do you use with Thermal paste?

Never done this before and whats the best method to apply the MX-4 Compound?

Would you say spread or a horizontal line and let the cooler spread it once applied?

everyone has a different method
i use the 'cling-film on finger' method and spread it as evenly as i can
theres the card method (spread it like butter)
theres the 'splat-mathod' blob in middle pop hsf onto (hope it dosn't leak over or cpu gets pwned)
or there the 'line' with hsf put on top (again, don't use too much or it will leak)

thats all i can think of right now, choose your favorite

+1, used this method for some time, never leaked yet, l just put a tiny pea sized blob in the center.

I have installed a 2600k with a mega and mx-4 compound and i did a thin line in the centre of the cpu and then turned the mega side to side slightly before bolting it down...

I'm no longer convinced that it makes any difference whatsoever.

It makes little to no difference in my experience.

The thermal paste and how much of it you use do though.

Blob in the middle seems to be the best/easiest way though, at least with unlapped heatsinks/CPUs.
