What MMO's are still popular?

I am really enjoying Champions Online but agree that it will not be to everyone's taste. Aion holds no interest for me at all.

Casual friendly, already released, high solo/duo content, mature community, decent populations. I would say LoTRO.

This.

Lord of the Rings sounds your best bet at the moment. Other than Aion and Darkfall (zero interest), I've had a punt at most MMO's of the last 10-15 years and LotRO is the only one I'd consider re-subbing to at the moment.

Naturally, people prefer different things in MMO's, but given what you have said you are after, LotRO should suit you pretty well.

This or Warcraft. Warcraft has a decent (if immature) population, loads to do / see, good PvP / PvE, casual friendly, been out long enough to have a high level of polish.

Or you can jump on the hype bandwagon and play Aion :)

DDO was pretty good for casual play. Its not a true MMO, being more like guild wars where its all instanced missions.

Havent played it for a long time but I enjoyed it back when I did.

I should point out, didn't specifically want PvE, PvP is always fun :) Probably why we liked Conan so much. At the moment its between LotR, AoC and Champions Online. Guildwars does look alright but its quite old and a few friends have said its good but doesnt have the 'MMO' sense as much.

Champions Online - Not sure how well my computer would run it, also does it work well? Obviously its the newest so am assuming there are quite a few bugs?
LotR - Heard its still popular, does it have a decent amount of content? How is the PvP
AoC - Any BIG changes since it was released? Got to about level 45 in the first couple of months of its release but would probably start a new character if I went back.

Cheers for the help guys, should point out as said, Aion isn't out yet so is not really of any help.

OK. Having read this (which I should have done first) I'd reiterate my vote for Lord of the Rings. Popular and content won't be an issue, at all, ever. The PvP isn't to everyone's taste, but it doesn't try to do too much; it is what it is. Single (fairly large) zone, keep capping, zerging (if you choose), small unit tactical (again, if you choose) or run of the mill skirmishing.

AoC has got better, but it still falls short. I get the feeling it is treading water before they just cut their losses and call it a day. The seiges and villages, whilst much better, still don't deliver what they promised and the higher content and class/PvP balance are still a little off.

Champs Online. Just no. I played City of Heroes for years, and bloody loved it, but Chimps still hasn't worked out what it want to be. The skill sets are poorly implemented and the interface is rubbish. It might be good, but it certainly isn't even close yet.

Maybe way off here, but have you looked at the free games?

One i enjoyed a lot for jump in and play was RYL2. Might do you for a weekend type game? I am sure there are many others out there.

Just general polishing and balancing. There were cartloads of bugs, quests that break, skills/feats that didn't work, these are almost entirely gone. Melee classes got some love as they've cut down the steps it takes to activate combos, and they've overhauled the statistics/combat system so now you can finally understand at a glance what the bonuses on a weapon or piece of armour do. Not massive amounts of new content - 2 big zones (one for 50-60, one for 75+) and a few new dungeons that you enter from existing zones, but it feels a little more fleshed-out: now there are quests leading you to particular areas of each zone, whereas before there were large bits of each map where there was just no reason for you to go - there were mobs to kill there, but no quests, meaning most players didn't even notice them.

I have to say that I was mostly enjoying the 2 weeks I was playing it. Some aspects of it are still very grindy (pvp levelling, crafting and gathering, building a city) but you don't really have to do them. I was happy enough doing what I enjoyed, which was world pvp and minigames, with the occasional raid. I got to 80 within the re-evaluation period (I was 72 or 73 when I quit) and spent most of the final few days pvp'ing. I suppose most people would've been raiding compulsively to get the best gear, but, tbh, I didn't care, as the effect of me having a few more hitpoints or doing a little less DPS than "optimal" doesn't amount to much in a group fight (though obviously it's more important in 1v1).

Nevertheless, it's still a pale shadow of the game they promised, and whenever I thought of what it should've been I felt like ragequitting.

You could try the DDO Unlimited, which is the american version, but its f2p just to get a taste of the game or i still think theres a 10 trial on the EU site, its become more solo friendly.

A warning if you're going to play Champs Online, at the moment they seem to be having problems keeping the servers up, they seem to be up and down more times than a diabetic at a wine bar, and on some resets I've lost levels and quests I've completed

Thanks for the help guys, my friend and I thought it might be best to wait for Aion although, everyone always raves about MMO's just before they're released and then all the negativity sets in. Think the only one that did impress was WoW as I played it in beta. Not really my kind of style but impressived at how polished and varied it was nonetheless.

For anyone whose played Aion, what kind of spec does it need to run well?
