What Modular PSU to get?

A little off topic, but I just noticed in your sig that you've got an E7200@4Ghz! That has to be watercooled, right?

I used to have watercooling.

Just got a Zalman CNSP9700LED now, though.

The temp sensors are very unreliable on the 45nm CPU's, but Realtemp says idle 38, load 62. With very good case ventilation.

i cant see why your so suprised. my pc pulled about 320w from the mains under full load, and that at the time was a fully loaded 3.2ghz e6600, 8800gtx, 4gb ram, 10x 120mm fans, 10 or so usb devices, 3x 500gb hard drives, usual pci cards ect.

that was measured with a meter, not a guess on some dodgy psu calculator site lol

Would that be a corsair PSU james? :p

well James I am surprised simply cause that means I have an issue with my psu.. which is a hiper by the way...

I really don't know what to say.. just that with my GTX on this psu the system reboots during gaming. I guess I am gonna have to get the Tagan sooner than I thought.

tnx for you posts though.... they were a bit... ..illuminating!!

not only that... but now that I think of it...
only reason I am decided on the tagan is cause it's 1100w. 80amps, dual eng, for 130euros.. and getting a second 88GTX for 250E was my next step (haven;t really decided if I 'll ever go 3way Sli)

..but according to our discussion here a 750w will do me just fine

hmm.... thinking... thinking... :\

^ Hmm...becoming less of a fanboy now are we?

your only digging yourself a hole mate. for your sake, just stop it.

that would explain a lot actually. There have been all sorts of trouble with early hipers, especially rhe 'type R' 580w. Was it the 520w hiper that you had? looking at the specs, its an old design biased towards its ability on the 5v line. reading the specs shows:

+3.3V 28A
+5V 52A
+12V 20A

pc's these days require a larger 12v rail. the cpu and gpu are both powered by the 12v rails now (never used to be the case). if you look at the 520w corsair that i mentioned:

+3.3v 24A
+5v 24A
+12v 40A

you can see straight away that even though its 'rated' at the same wattage, the available current on the 12v rail (which modern pc's crave) is double that of the 520w hiper. now, when you consider a stock 8800gtx will consume around 13-14a from the 12v rail at stock speeds, that only leaves you with 7 or so amps to power the rest of the pc (any components on the motherboard that use 12v, hard drives and optical drives use the 12v rail as well as the 5v). for a psu thats over-rated anyway (the 520w hiper) you can see the likely reason why its running in to problems, where as a modern psu like the 520w corsair (which itself is slightly under-rated) would sail through without problems:) These days, you dont need anythign like 52a on the 5v rail, its all about 12volts now:)

Seriously, just stop.

Nowhere has anyone shown any fanboyism. If people want to recommend the same PSU over and over again then what's the problem? Especially given that Corsairs have been the PSU of choice for quite some time now and their reliability is thus proven.

tnx James... that explains a lot.

tagan.. here I come :)

any comments on the 1100 U33 IZT model...
from what I've read is just a bit better than the turbojet
