Guys,

We all use Handbrake etc for ripping of dvd's to computer, and mp4 h.264 encoding....

but it isnt till recently with my 3rd Gen Nano & iPhone that most if not all .mp4's I've ripped and added to iTunes fail to be added to either device.

They look and play superb in iTunes/Front Row, but won't sync to my phone.

I downloaded iSquint, which is pretty good by all accounts?

But what I'm asking....

Handbrake has a preset for iPhone? Is it best from now on I use this preset for my future DVD rips?

This should sync no problem yea? but what about quality on the computer?

I don't want to be ripping many of my DVD's to my mac if only to see they play back poorly on the computer?

Suggestions/Thoughts.

Rip em twice. :)

Once using the iPhone setting, once using your normal one.

You 'avin a laugh? I have to sit here twiddling my thumbs till it's done before I continue with anything else...I aint gonna stop and start it again!

There is a AppleTV preset? Although I think it's resolution will be too high for the iPhone, simply because the Normal preset appears to be too.

I suppose a slightly lower Res. won't do any harm? It's only because I want to create a big playlist of my films in iTunes which I can then easily add to either device.

I have the same problem - ripping them twice isnt really an option because of disk space.

Slightly OT - OP what sort of file sizes are you getting with them settings?

Thanks,

It's really hard to say, I've done a few movies with 'Normal' preset in Handbrake, and it's anything from 800mb to 1.7GB...

I don't appear to have any higher than that 1.7GB one.

Just done a quick episode of xfiles in .mp4 h.264 with the preset of iPhone.

My god what a terrible view, yes it'll look good on the iphone...but NOT itunes etc.

I need a much higher resolution which the iphone can shrink?

Yea I will try that EVH

I naturally thought though that the iPhone would shrink the file anyway?

I suppose that's what has caught me out...

TBH I think I will continue to rip dvds in Normal .MP4 H.264 format.

Great for watching on the iMac.
