What next and where to sell?

Whilst still a "spec me" thread, it's got a few extra bits bolted on just to keep motors more interesting.

1). I've owned the M5 just under 2 years (20 months) and in that time have accrued 21k miles. It's just tipped the mileage scales at 50k so I'm thinking now is probably a good time to think about moving it on. Not necessarily because of it's mileage, but because I'm back to the reality of having something with more space that I care less about. There is no doubt that I will miss the M5 but this will only be fleeting as I intend to go for an LCI F90 in a few years time.

2). Next car needs to be sensible. I've had a Disco before and really enjoyed it. I am considering the new one, but actually, I would happily take a late D4 if the right one came along. I'm also thinking about the RRS and FFRR, but they need to be right and not cost the earth. I would intend to sell the M5 which is owned and put some of the money down as a deposit against a PCP. In addition, I also need a decent 4x4 style estate car. I'm thinking the Skoda Octavia vRS or Superb Sportline. These might be bought outright, or again, part cash, the rest PCP.

3). So, where do I sell the M5? Little point in PXing it against a D4, D5 or RR as they'll give me next to nothing for it given that it's not their typical car to sell. I could just take it along to BMW, but again, without purchasing something to replace it, I think that's going to sting me. I could consider an X5 but I'm not sure they are large enough (compared to D4). Or, do I sell it privately? It's just had a fairly heft service and MOT due in Jan, it will also need 4 new tyres.

Question 3 is the one I really need help with, but also looking forward to some suggestions for the next wagon.

I'm not really sure a Land Rover dealer will realistically give you much less than a BMW dealer would in part exchange. At the end of the day, they all use similar car pricing guides, and will all just give you what they expect will be the least they would get at auction for it. OK, a BMW dealer might be able to put it on their forecourt, but my local Land Rover dealers are part of a group that also have BMW dealers, so I'd suspect that could often be the case anyway.

But on that basis, you could take it to auction yourself and see what happens. You never know, it may well be right up the street of a couple of independent traders who are at that auction that day, and give you enough money for it. You can always set a reserve on it at the dealer px price.

Worth a try with WBAC. My boss went to the BMW dealer to get rid of an X5 after using them for years.

They only offered £18.5k but WBAC gave him £20.5k or it was £19.5/21.5k. Quite a difference either way.

We need two cars sadly, but yes, its frustrating that there's no M5 touring anymore so an E63/S estate is actually quite on the cards

Sell it privately, it is really really easy once you've put it on auto trader.

Clean it, take pictures of the car and documents and everything etc. Put them on auto trader at the average price for like a 2 week ad and see how many calls you get. People are buying big engine petrol again so you should get a few bites.

When it comes to the sale just print off a receipt from the AA template and you're good to go.

Little effort for thousands to be saved.

@Django x2

Look on auto trader & piston heads. Price yours accordingly and you will sell it.

There are also a number of performance dealers who specialise in these sorts of cars that would probably give you above wbac. Merv Hannam locally is a good shout at this is right up his street. Plus given his locality and clientele he can afford to charge more.

Sadly, looking at main dealer prices on these now especially with high mileage, I don't think you will get where you want to get to, even given your M5's spec. It will at least sell quickly when priced right.

As for your new car, I think there is too much 'moon on a stick' given what you need, what you want to spend and what you have previously owned.

Plus you have the added problem of what all your neighbours own. Put the wrong car on your drive where you are and they will think you have fallen on hard times.

Lease or PCP an M240i on the TRL @ Berry's deal and a Skoda Octavia VRS estate.

I know it's always an added challenge for you as although you can go out and pick up a brand new M2/M5/E63s/F Type R etc etc tomorrow without thinking about it from a £££ perspective, you would rather use the money for other things.

But if I had your income and even a fraction of your Mike Lowrey level of trust fund I would E63S.

Sod what the curtain twitchers think, let them get on with it!

My sister lives in an affluent area, plenty of said twitchers, I was round there earlier, they have just ditched their X5 M5.0d in favour of an Audi S6 but apparently - to said twitchers - they must "be struggling to drop from the BMW to the Audi" - all utter cack, the BMW has gone because they don't need 7 seats any more and her husband wanted a saloon car for his business use.

They still have a new M4 tucked in the garage (which said twitchers may or may not have noticed) along with a 1 series which is the family "hack".

Buy what suits your needs, not what you think or fear the neighbours will (or won't) judge you on!
