I know the 970 is the card of choice currently, but is there anything new being released in the new year?

I guess a new naming scheme rather than a 1XXX. I would expect tweaked overclocked versions of the 9XX.

Nvidia did that from the 8XXX to 9XXX and from the 4XX to 5XX series.

AMD did it from the 7XXX to the 260/270/280 cards.

In a way it's like Intel's tick-tock approach.

A 960, then Titan 2 and perhaps other GM200 cards from Feb/March next year.

A lot will depend on whether AMD decide to release anything new and whether it is any good or not.

AMD must be losing sales to the 970. I can only believe the reason why they haven’t countered is because they don’t have anything ready yet that will equal or be better.

No doubt when they do release something it's because they believe it will win back sales.

That's what I'm waiting for.
But the thing is if you actually consider the performance of the 970 (780 level), the 960 would most probably be just a lower power-consumption card of around 770's level...and most likely only with 2GB or vram rather than 4GB for being a sub £200 card.

If it is performance you are after, you'd most likely best bet to go for 2nd hand 780 or 290...
