Well ok.. so I got the 5 gfx cards and tried a 260 216 (3 versions), 2x 260's in SLI, a 4870X2 an HD5830... but sold everything.

The 4870x2 is last to go after it somehow borked and is only running as a 4870 1gb. I know I simply won't get anything near the 4870X2 performance for the price i got it for, and just plain gutted that I am left with what is a 4870. It run's fine, but where do I go from here with little to no money? (I'm only really sold the X2 because I just gutted it went wrong, really I should be keeping it, but it's sold now.. so moving on..)

I was thinking somehow stretch for a 275 or something else? Got to be at least better than a 4870 and 260 216 (otherwise I should have kept the X2), and somehow as cheap as possible lol. Advice? Assume I have around £75... and 2nd hand prices.

============

Side note: Amazingly as a software developer I make a pretty good wage, but being married, loans, largeish rent etc and a baby... it somehow just dissappears lol.

You MIGHT get lucky and pick up a 460, theyre going for around £115 new so should be under a ton 2nd hand easy, I wouldnt of thought a 275 would be a worthwile step up, only marginal really, seen as 4870=260 and 275 is just better than the 260

Kinda a backwards step though, in titles like BC2 that SLI combo I would expect to really suffer. Given I only have an e4300 @ 3.2Ghz, prob best I stay away from SLI/CF on the budget. Thanks for the suggestion though, keep them coming :-D

Hmm, ok.. if I were considering a 5770, i'd prob just get a 4890 tbh (unless the 5700 was stupid cheap). I'll keep an eye out for a 460 though. Thx guys.

You really want something of the 470 caliber and up I reckon.

Plus the 470 is really dropping in price. But the 6870 is a cooler more power effiecent card in the same performance category.

Im baseing this opinion on the needs of tommorrows Dx11 games.

I know, but what I want and what I can afford at this precise moment in time are at odds with each other. I would love to get something in the £140-£200 range but I also like my testicles being attached to my body.

I completely agree that something like the 6850/70 470 is where i need to be btw, it just ain't gonna happen unless I come into some money. i.e. I did a little overtime and got £500 but I'm still in the crap lol. (hence my pathetic budget).

Real shame the 4870x2 didn't work out for you.. guess I wont be getting my heatsink back now? Its cool mate, I'm just winding you up!
I know exactly what you mean about cash too as I also have wife, loans, baby etc and enjoy the old man plumbs sticking around.
Could you ask for cash for xmas and then get it as a present from everyone? I wouldn't go for anything less than a 460 tbh, but then again I would just buy it and not tell the misses!
edit: selling something on ebay? that baby would probably get you a few quid!

:p Wouldn't have sold it without it I expect. If you feel that badly about it i'll send you some more beer tokens lol :D I reckon I got to ambitious with trying get the card cooler, which I achieved I must have done something wrong somewhere :-( I hope the next guy get's a bargain with it though.

ROFL @ baby sale ;-) She'd fetch a pretty penny, as I'm not sure where she gets her looks from, defo not me! lol.

I am very wary of the bay now as they tend to hold you ransom, I would rather take the hit and sell/buy here on members market. I have a 3870 I have promised to someone but they haven't been fruitful in paying, and other random stuff, like 1950pro with a aftermarket cooler etc. I suppose I could sell my fatal1ty fps sound card, as I have the Asus X48 RoG sound card I could use instead... but I know sound would suffer.

I just know I'm gonna regret this, but gonna suffer with the Asus X48 Sound Commander or whatever it's called, and give up the X-FI FPS. I just know that this is such a bad idea though.... lol. I sold one, then had to buy another as I couldn't stand on board sound before... I suspect the Asus RoG is not much better than onboard noise.

Will increase my budget by a smidgen.

How much money is available to spend?

What resolution do you game at?

Whats more important, powerful card at expense of heat and noise or do you specifically want a quiet card?

What is specs of rest of system?

(I had a quick look through the thread but couldnt find this info)

Also consider looking at second hand bargins rather then picking up brand new cards... such as 2nd hand 5850 etc.... if cheap enough...

I won't be getting anything other than 2nd hand bud :-)

Res: 1920*1200 if possible, but will reduce where it performs poorly to next ratio resolution.

I don't specifically need a quiet card.. and I have a Corsair HX620W so powering anything isn't a problem. Noise is annoying but can be dealt with.

Spec is in signature: E[email protected] on an Asus Rampage Formula x48 board, replacing the artic cooling 7 pro cooler with an Hyper 212, 4X 1GB DDR2.

Money, well will probably be somewhere about 90 -100 now I guess. Not right now, will be when the other stuff sells though :-(

I think if you where to buy brand new then this is probably the best you can afford: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-238-AS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1830

It is slightly over budget.

I looked at this for benchmarks between the 5770 and the 460 768mb card and the 460 is better.

If your buying second hand, then I would honestly say, if it works out to only £20 extra for something of the caliber of a 5850... then thats what you want.

edit* it probably is unrealistic for me to think that some one might sell a 5850 for £100.....

I thought maybe a 5830.... but alas looking here it doesnt look like there is a big perfomance difference to be gained.

Edit2* If you can get second hand 460's then you might be in luck (obviously if given the choice between a 1gb and 768mb version, the 1gb will help at 1920x1080 res)!
