So anyone who recalls my excitment at changing a PSU not so long ago will be pleased to hear I have now built several low end PCs from stuff folk gave me.

Current spec inc, P4 ht overclocked to 3.2 mhz, 1 gb ram and a FX5500 GPU (agp8) on a Gigabite board.

I also have an abit mobo (socket 478) with pci-e and someone just gave me an athlon 64x2 4600 with bent pins but no mobo....

So where do I go now. Tranfer everything onto the abit and splash out on a 1950 gpu? Pick up a cheap am2 mobo and hope the pins are ok?

Or is it time to buy new (but I love buiding and dont want the fun to stop!)

The AMD Chip is significantly faster than the P4 but if it's broken that's no good. Ideally, you need an AM2 board to borrow. Failing that, I'd buy a cheap £30 Am2 board to test. If the CPU doesn't work, then you can probably sell the Mobo at auction for a minimal loss. Nice thing is, if it works, many AM2 boards will be able to accept the new phenom chips, although it's not certain every board will get the necessary bios update.
