Hi guys,

Right, I've just reserved, and am ordering a Canon 24-70L 2.8 from Kerso on Thursday.

Now this is my next lens as its a lens I NEED. It's a true workhorse, fantastic for weddings are portraits (which is what I mainly shoot).

Now I can't decide what to get after that, I'm going to start saving straight away afterwards and hope to have my 'next' purchase (or to be ordering it) before christmas.

Here is my current shortlists for potential next purchases and why:

135L - The lens is a superb piece of work, the images it delivers are fantastic, is plenty fast at f/2.0, I love it and would love to own it. Also as its just £700 now it makes it even more tempting.

70-200L f/2.8 IS - The lens is a beast, I use one constantly when assisting and think it'd be a great addition. It delivers great images, has an awesome useable focal length, VERY quick at 2.8 which is invaluable, the IS is brilliant, eventually I WILL own this lens, there is no doubt about that, but do I get it next or not? - Second hand the MkI is coming in at around £900 for a mint one, making it affordable.

50mm f/1.4 - I have the 1.8....it doesn't get much use but when I do use it it DOES deliver well...I've used the 1.4 several times now and the build quality and image quality it delivers over it is worth the outlay in my opinion. Its around £250 now, by the time I've sold the 1.8 for say £70 it makes it roughly £180 - very cheap for the images it delivers, just like the 1.8. It also delivers a much nicer bokeh in comparison to the 1.8 which is a bit harsh to be honest. Although nice if your starting out in photography (hence why I got it)

OR

5D Classic - I currently use a 40D which is brilliant...it's quick, delivers great images, I'm very used to it and it suits me brilliantly. However, when I did a wedding with Nick a couple of weeks ago he used his 5D Classic and going through the images it's almost a direct comparison between the 40D and 5D and I have to say I am preferring the 5D's images overall. The full frame that gives the softer DoF is to die for (yes I realise that sounds a tad gay :p), the better ISO performance are the main 'wants' and reasons why I want the thing. Things pushing me away from it are the LCD screen on the back, I'm used to having a great screen on the 40D and the 5D's screen in comparison sucks balls, also I'm just so used to the 40D now, I pick up a 5D and it feels slightly alien to me. Now ideally I wouldn't want to sell the 40D, I'd like to have it as a second body/backup, I could probably pick up a well looked after 5D for around £700.

580ex II - I have a 430ex II right now and use it all the time, but I've been doing a fair bit of off camera flash work recently and been finding having a flash with a bit more umph would be nicer. Also the ability to control other flashes as well (something the 580 offers over the 430 which is another big plus), plus it's weather sealed. These are around the £250 - £280 mark now I think? Haven't checked properly if I'm honest, also it would be nice to have 2 flashes.

Pocket wizards or similar - I VERY nearly bought an elinchrom kit the other week, and pretty sure I'm going to get it anyway. It's £135 and is basically pocketwizards but without the brand. Just sold my ST-E2 so the outlay is only about £40.

Some people are probably thinking "Jeez Jake, your clearly able to throw a fair chunk of money into photography at the minute, why not go for that 5D II you've been craving since it was released?" - Well obviously this is a thought that has crossed my mind several times, as it affectively brings what I like of the 40D and the 5D into one package and is better overall and has amazing ISO capabilities and as we've seen from Raymonds thread...is no lacky when it comes to performing for weddings. I really want this camera....like I REALLY want one. New can be had for about £1500 and second hand £1200.

I could afford it before christmas but I don't know. Gut instinct is telling me to buy more glass first, for £1500 I could have the 70-200, 50mm 1.4 and 580ex, allowing me to do a lot more. It's why I'm not massively considering it right now, but my want for one hasn't gone at all.

So as you can see I haven't got a clue or made any real decision as to what to save for next.

I wondered, after you have read all of that gibberish, what you think and what you would go for. Don't say "I'd go for the 70-200 because I do a lot of motorsport" because I don't do motorsport :p - I shoot portraits, weddings and people. I want something that will benefit me for those :)

Many thanks for reading, I appreciate the time taken :)

Jake

right let me get this straight after the 24 - 70 you're going for either 3 lenses or a new body plus flash equipment stuff?

What are the lenses you are using just now (own)

Since you've said you use the 70 - 200 when assisting I'd go for that with the FF 5D. See i can be helpful at times :)

Currently I have

17-40L
50mm 1.8
85mm 1.8 (which died the other day and needs to be repaired)

70-200 and 5D isn't affordable by xmas. One or the other

All would be nice, if I was shooting weddings I'd go for the 5D actually - the 135 is a luxury, beautiful but a luxury given you're likely shooting with flash anyway and don't *need* the speed. The 70-200 would be my choice of all the glass but I've not ever been entirely comfortable with the focal length on a crop body myself (you may be different) but regardless you'll need one some day. The 50/1.4 is a luxury too in a way but at that price you may as well snap one up.

During the day for reportage stuff I flash is very rarely used. So 2.0 is great to have, although one point to bear in mind when me and Nick shot the wedding the 135L didn't come out of the bag. Although I see what your saying and it's a valid point.

So thats a vote for the 70-200

5D and 135.

Then you have two bodies (a must for any paid work IMO). Two great lenses (24-70, 135).

Thats your £1500 spent.

Then when you earn a bit more, swap the 40D for a 5DII; then if you use the 5DII and 24-70 and 5D with 135, the extra stop of the 135 compensates for the not-quite so good high-ISO of the mkI. If ye get me gist.

...(but if it was me I'd get a 400 f/2.8 non-is for football :p)

You make a lot of sense :)

buy my 135L is my advice to you :p

lol didn't know it was for sale :p

It is unfortunately, the 35L might be going next depending if I can raise the money elsewhere to fund my next purchase. Very relunctant to do so but no point having such expensive gear sitting there gathering dust.

Thats a shame. I might drop you an email :)

I think before I set on the 5D I'll see if I can borrow Marks during his quiet time over the next couple of weeks and see if I get on with it. Use both the 40D and 5D and see if I still one want :)

In that case I'd suggest the 5D as you'll be using the 70 - 200 when assisting from the tog (Mark ECP I presume) and on the days when you're not assisting possible to borrow that lens?

Every chance Mark will be using his, it's buy my own or rent one like I did for Sirrel Squirrels wedding.

70-200 out of the lenses you mentioned, it's a great lens and already proven that you'll use it lots. What about the 16-35 mkII? I've just bought a cheap Tamron 17-35 until I can afford the Canon L.

Well I've got the 17-40L so my wide end is covered. It's only f/4.0 but it's limited me yet, so I don't feel the need to change it. Good shout though :)

I think personally just going to a 5D is going to dramatically alter the way you take photographs.

More than anything is the huge viewfinder which opens your eyes to see more of whats going on through the optics. I think the 70 - 200 is great but its so heavy. Its not a fast lens to switch to when you are in a hurry either due to its sheer size. I would consider that your 17 - 40 is gonna bloom into a gorgeously wide shooter on a 5D and your top end of zoom is gonna take a huge wack so if you feel the 135 isn't long enough on a 40D then a 135 on a 5D is gonna really suck for you. Its just about picking a working range you are happy with.

Yeah, I see what you mean. I know the 70-200 is damn very but I find that very handy when balancing along with the IS it allows you to happily nail lots of candids :)

Mind if I ask what price Kerso is currently doing the 24-70L for?

I'm tempted to sell my 28-105L and put it towards one, since moving to FF the 28-105 doesn't have much in terms of reach so considering a 24-70 and 70-200 combo.

I'm paying £850 + £10 to send it. Or thereabouts...can't remember exact figures and phone with email on is just out of reach :p

Don't do that Phate. I have an Elinchrom set that I have never used in anger. One sender, Two recievers.

Not that there is anything wrong with it. It's just that flash isn't my style.

Give me a call and we can sort something out.

Andrew

Cool beans :) - Will give you a call on my lunch break :)
