My engine oil needs topping up in my '84 205XE. I have absolutely no idea what grade to use, 5w20, etc etc, so any advice would be greatfully received.

Also, would a low oil level result in a strong smell of petrolish after travelling at speed, or am I gonna have to get the garage to look for a fuel leak? It only seems to happen when the fuel in the tank is low.
Many thanks
Mads

I would guess a 10w-40 semi-synthetic. As for the smell, I doubt low oil would cause it (define low though)

Sounds odd, the petrol smell, that won't be a result of oil being low though, but also a fuel leak would be apparent when the tank is full rather than empty.

As for oil, 10W 40 I think.

Owners manual says 10w-40 for normal driving and 15w-50 for Sporty Driving. Dont use the sporty grade unless you work the engine hard all the time or it is very worn!

It doesn't matter. Within a week it will be a puddle on the driveway. :p

:D
More seriously, if it's "getting on a bit" a 15w-40 will be kinder to it.

I wish... its a 1 litre. No idea on the choke though.
Probably single choke, it's a basic engine but it should run forever if it's got oil and coolant. If it does go bang, just stick a 2L mi16 in there, it's twice the size but it will be a bit of a sleeper if you leave the rest of the car standard! :D
