you need it to attach the cable strands into a wall socket

unless the wall socket has screw type connectors and you strip the plastic coating off the cable yourself, however this is a much harder and fiddlier way to do it

punchdown tools are easy to use - put the cable strand into the part where it's meant to go on the wall socket and push down using the tool, connects it in and strips the cable making a good connection

Soz, I meant punchdown tool.

I'm only making cables right now, but I'll keep it anyway if I ever have to do a jack or two. :) Thanks!

good stuff - they're always handy anyway, and it's a hell of a lot easier making a wall point than it is making the cable using the RJ45 connector itself

and at about £15 - £20 to buy, you might as well hang on to it now you've got it

cheers

There are different types of punchdown tool, depending on the outlets / Patchpanels you are using.

There are IDC and 110 (one-ten) connectors and you need different tools for each.

You may also have heard a IDC punchdown tool called a "Krone tool" after a popular manufacturer of the tool and associated products.
